On January 14, the electric drive, automation control and instrumentation system project for the 1650mm hot strip mill of Guangdong Donghai Steel Group, undertaken by IET achieved a successful trial production of 1.2×1020mm and 1.35×1230mm thin-gauge strips in one pass.

This production line is invested by Guangdong Donghai Steel Group to expand its product portfolio and enhance its market competitiveness.

IETwas responsible for the design, integration, supply and commissioning of the full-line drive, automation and instrumentation systems for the 1650mm hot rolling line.

The main process equipment includes:3 walking beam heating furnaces, 2 high-pressure water descaling units, 2 reversing roughing mills with edger rolls, 1 hot coil box, 1 flying shear, 1 finishing vertical mill, 7 four-high finishing mill stands, laminar cooling system, 3 coiler and 1 coil conveying line, etc.

Thin-gauge products impose higher requirements on production organization, process control, model setup and equipment precision.To capture market share in thin-gauge strips and realize a technological breakthrough for Donghai Steel Group China, starting in January 2026, Donghai Steel Group China and IET jointly developed thin-gauge rolling technologies tailored to the 1650mm line.Multiple challenges were successfully solved, including difficult thin-gauge control, poor threading stability, and strip fluttering after the finishing mill.

Great achievements come from persistent effort.With the trust and support of leaders and departments of Donghai Steel Group China, IET carried out systematic research and breakthroughs in production organization, core process parameter control, precise rolling model setup, equipment calibration and control logic optimization.The stable rolling of 1.2×1020mm and 1.35×1230mm ultra-thin strips was successfully realized.This achievement once again demonstrates IET’s strong capabilities in technological innovation and engineering application, and proves the excellent stability and superiority of the system.
